    Karnataka Shop Act registration assistance

Shops and Establishments Registration in Karnataka records a covered establishment under the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1961. Coverage depends on the establishment, applicable area and statutory exemptions—not simply on whether the business has hired its first employee.

Kickstart helps review the activity, prepare employer and establishment details and organise the filing. Our Shop and Establishment Act registration overview explains the wider service context.

Who is covered and when to register?

Shops, offices and other commercial establishments should check the Act’s definitions and applicable exemptions against their actual operations. A retail shop, restaurant or consultancy should not assume that another business registration replaces this assessment.

For a newly covered establishment, the prescribed statement and fee are to be submitted within 30 days of commencement of work. Keep the actual commencement date and establishment details consistent across the application and supporting records.

    • Confirm the establishment’s activity, name and premises address.
    • Identify the employer and responsible authorised person.
    • Record the constitution and relevant worker/employee details accurately.
    • Check coverage and exemptions before deciding that registration is unnecessary.

Shop Act registration is not a municipal Trade Licence

Shops and Establishments registration is a labour-law registration. A BBMP or municipal Trade Licence concerns the applicable municipal permission for a trade/activity and premises. The two are not interchangeable.

Depending on the activity and location, a business may need one or both, along with other permissions. Do not use a Shop Act certificate as proof that every municipal, fire, food-safety or sector-specific requirement has been satisfied.

    Documents and establishment information

The current e-Karmika workflow determines the final upload requirements. Prepare legible records with matching names and addresses, and use only the documents relevant to the establishment.

    Record

    Preparation

    Employer and applicant

PAN, identity/address details and contact information.

    Premises

Rental agreement, ownership or other accepted address/possession evidence.

    Business constitution

Incorporation, partnership or other applicable constitution records.

    Authorised person

Photograph and authorisation documents where the applicant acts for an entity.

    Establishment details

Activity, commencement date, employee information and prescribed declarations/forms.

The official portal lists address proofs such as the relevant rental, GST or BBMP records, as applicable, along with identity, constitution and authorisation documents. Follow its current self-attestation, signed Form A and payment instructions.

    e-Karmika registration process

Use Karnataka’s e-Karmika/current Labour Department filing route. Existing registered users should use their existing account for the relevant renewal, amendment or other service rather than creating duplicate records.

    1. Review establishment coverage and identify the correct filing request.
    2. Prepare the employer, constitution, premises and employee details.
    3. Register or access the relevant e-Karmika account and complete the prescribed form.
    4. Upload the applicable documents and pay the government fee through the current payment route.
    5. Track verification or clarification requests and provide consistent supporting evidence.
    6. Download/check the issued certificate and retain the registration and payment records.

    Fees, certificate validity and renewal

Government fees are linked to the applicable employee-count slab and current Karnataka schedule. Confirm the live portal amount rather than relying on a generic fixed price. Kickstart’s professional fee is separate and will be explained for the requested registration, renewal or amendment support.

The registration certificate has a five-year validity period under the applicable Karnataka framework. Rule 3A prescribes the renewal timing 90 days before expiry; plan the filing and document review ahead of that point and follow the current online renewal or eligible auto-renewal workflow.

Processing depends on the filing and authority verification. We do not offer a guaranteed issue date. Keep changes to establishment or employer information and ongoing returns/records requirements under review.

Common mistakes and ongoing employer duties

A registration certificate does not establish that all employment-law requirements have been met. Working hours, leave, welfare and statutory record obligations continue where applicable.

    • Using a municipal Trade Licence as a substitute for Shop Act registration.
    • Entering a different legal name or premises address across records.
    • Using an inaccurate employee count or commencement date.
    • Starting a duplicate application instead of using an existing registration/account.
    • Leaving amendments or renewal preparation until after the relevant deadline.

    What Kickstart helps with

We help assess the filing requirement, identify the applicable preparation checklist, organise employer and premises records and support the online submission and query response. Renewal or amendment support can be scoped to the existing registration.

Share your business activity, Karnataka location, establishment constitution, employee count and whether you have an existing certificate. These details help us distinguish a fresh registration from a renewal, amendment or a separate municipal-licence enquiry.

The Karnataka certificate has a five-year validity period. Plan renewal ahead of the Rule 3A timing of 90 days before expiry and follow the current applicable portal workflow.
